Marienplatz in Munich with the New Town Hall and the Frauenkirche

Walking to Marienplatz

The walk to Marienplatz is short and runs through the Sendlinger Strasse pedestrian zone, which begins right at the hotel. After five minutes you are at the town hall with its glockenspiel, in the middle of the old town with shops, cafés and churches all around. In Advent the Christmas market fills the square; see Christmas market.

On the way back, or when it rains, take the underground: the U3 and U6 link Sendlinger Tor and Marienplatz in one stop. How to reach us from the station or the airport is explained on How to find us.

Viktualienmarkt, the Asam Church and the Glockenbachviertel

About two minutes’ walk from Marienplatz is the Viktualienmarkt. The market has been here for more than 200 years; some 110 traders sell fruit and vegetables, meat, cheese, fish, bread, spices and flowers from Monday to Saturday.

The Asam Church stands on our street too, at Sendlinger Strasse 32. The brothers Cosmas Damian and Egid Quirin Asam built it between 1733 and 1746; it counts among the most important late-baroque buildings in southern Germany, and admission is free (muenchen.de).

On the other side of the Sendlinger Tor gate begins the Isarvorstadt with the Glockenbachviertel and Gärtnerplatz, a round square laid out in 1860. The quarter is known as one of Munich’s lively districts, with plenty of bars, so a night out is never far from the hotel.

Hofbräuhaus and Karlsplatz

The Hofbräuhaus has stood on the Platzl since 1608, and you reach it on foot from Marienplatz. In the other direction, the pedestrian zone leads along Kaufingerstrasse and Neuhauser Strasse to Karlsplatz, which locals call Stachus; the city reckons on 10 to 15 minutes for that walk.
